Vision
NAATPN's new Technical Assistance and Training program speaks to the very heart of tradition and culture and strives to provide the organizational development, grassroots organizing, and tobacco advocacy expertise necessary to take on tobacco challenges for communities of color.

Funding
NAATPN is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and by the contributions of its members. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the largest US foundation devoted to improving the health and health care of all Americans. Its grantmaking is concentrated in four areas:

  • To assure that all Americans have access to basic health care at reasonable cost
  • To improve care and support for people with chronic health conditions
  • To promote healthy communities and lifestyles
  • To reduce the personal, social and economic harm caused by substance abuse- tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs.

History
NAATPN was launched after a national stakeholders meeting in Dallas in December 1999; the organization was chartered in late 2000. The organization's national headquarters was recently relocated to Columbia, SC, where it provides services to over 200 members and organizations.

Successes
Over the past several years, NAATPN successes include:

  • Coordination of national membership meeting for African Americans in tobacco control
  • Selection of a governing body representing all regions of the U.S.
  • Convening a national meeting of African American clergy in tobacco control
  • Facilitation of on-site training and technical assistance in 10 states
  • Participation in the Priority Populations Initiative of the American Legacy Foundation
  • Development of a culturally appropriate smoking cessation training protocol
  • Development of a communications infrastructure including a website (www.NAATPN.org), listserv and on-line newsletter
  • Parlaying national meetings into national consensus around a strategic plan for tobacco control in communities of African descent.

Staff
After a lengthy national search we have hired a staff of professionals that we feel personify the skills needed to help fulfill our program goal, to fill gaps in technical assistance and training services traditionally not afforded African American tobacco control advocates and others seeking to do tobacco control work with communities of color.
