NAATPN Workshop Descriptions

History of NAATPN – “Architects of the Village”
Learn about the history, founding objectives, organizational structure, staffing, programs, products, services and collaborations of the nation’s largest African American non-profit organization focused solely on tobacco use prevention (TUP) in Black communities.

African Americans and Tobacco – “From the Fields to the Factory”
This workshop traces the history of the tobacco industry’s relationship with African Americans and how this relationship has contributed to current health disparities.  Learn how the industry co-opted advertising, designed specific products for Blacks, and entertained upper crust society with race-based paraphernalia.  Learn about the early African American players in the TUP movement, and the counter-measures they employed to protect their communities.

“Smoking…the Dumbest Thing that Smart People Do!”
Beginning with definitions of environmental tobacco smoke (secondhand smoke) and an exhaustive list of the ingredients in cigarettes, this workshop provides facts about the health impact of smoking, how much money your state would save if it reduced smoking rates (tailored to each state), and lengths the industry goes to hook new smokers via new products and seductive advertising.  See why smoking is only for those that are unaware of the facts.

Follow the Signs: Tobacco Industry Tactics
Learn more about tobacco industry tactics from a trainer with expertise in tobacco marketing and adverting. This is a unique and intense workshop that assists in the understanding of tobacco industry marketing techniques, and addresses the impact of tobacco placement to specific populations. It is a two-part series with concentration in the following areas:

  • The Impact of Industry Contracts on the Placement, Presence, Price, and Promotion of Tobacco in Black Communities
  • Tobacco Industry Practices in Black Communities vs. the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement.

“Getting Noticed” - Successful Marketing for the African American Community
Learn effective strategies to marketing through the various media channels.  Learn how to create ongoing marketing campaigns specifically for the African American communities.  Heighten and improve your image through public communication techniques via this interactive and creative workshop.  Participants will learn how to employ partnership development and coordination efforts to form an effective communication network.

Establishing a 501(c)(3) Organization
Learn the basic steps in creating a non-profit organization.  A review of the forms necessary to charter in your state, to obtain an Employer Identification Number (EIN) and obtain 501(c)(3) designation from the Internal Revenue Service is part of every workshop.  Understand the advantages of becoming/creating a non-profit organization and the responsibilities, therein, after one is created.

Community Organizing and Grassroots Coalitions
Learn how to assess the assets of a community, to identify and engage key stakeholders, and develop a common vision to address TUP or any issue.  Participate in interactive exercises designed to eliminate barriers and build the trust that is a pre-requisite to establishing collaborative efforts.  Use this “how to” experience to become a viable part of the national NAATPN “village”.

“Fun”-raising and Grant Writing
Learn how to think differently when seeking and acquiring resources to support your efforts.  Change what can be tedious into a creative and liberating experience.  Learn “must-know” rules of grant writing.  Participants will be introduced to different types of grants to match funders.  The workshop ends with a 30-minute grant writing session.  Think you have what it takes?
